Whenever there is a large line of people for a certain service, whether on airlines or food courts or confession lines, we have the impulse to always take the place of the person in front of us, even when it is cramped and actually better for us to remain where we are until another few places in line advance. We also generally consider it an inconvenience when people in front of us do this exact same thing, as if they were keeping us from moving forwards by waiting the same amount of time with delayed initial movement. This phenomena ought to be studied.
